ニュースで英語を学ぼう： 嵐活動休止ーArashi will go on hiatus

我が家は家族で嵐ファンです。妻は大野くんファンで、半年ほど前から、何か変だ、大野くんはそのうち辞めるというかもしれないと心配していましたが、その心配が正に的中し、ショックを受けています。

さて、今回のニュース、英語ではどのように報道されているのか、チェックしてみました。

まず、日本のニュースの海外への発信元の代表格であるJapan Timesでは、以下のように報道されています。

「活動休止」は”go on hiatus”

キーワードの「活動停止」は、2種類の言い方で表されています。ひとつは、”take a break”、もうひとつは、”go on hiatus”です。

Take a break は分かりやすいですね。
Go on hiatus はあまり聞き慣れない人が多いと思います。hiatusは、ALCの英辞郎 on the WEB では、以下のように説明されています。

海外のNEWSをみても、この”hiatus”を使っているケースが多いようです。

オーストラリアのSBSでは、“Arashi announce hiatus“と記事タイトル、記事本文の両方で使用しています。

記事タイトルでよく使われるということは、”haitus” という単語は、割と一般に認知された言葉なんだと思います。
